4Configure via Vertex Configuration Tool or phone dialing
Web tool: Open the Vertex Configuration Tool in your browser, click Discover Devices, and follow the guided setup.
No-PC method: From a monitored VoIP phone, dial *00 to hear the current IP, then use *01–*09 commands to configure.
5Verify with a test call
Call in from a cell phone. Confirm the POS or monitoring software displays the caller ID within 2 rings.
Encrypted VoIP (TLS/SRTP): Vertex requires unencrypted SIP. If your VoIP provider encrypts calls, you will need an ATA adapter or EdgeMarc SBC to decrypt before the Vertex.

First-Time Setup
1Connect phone lines
Attach a line duplicator to each wall jack.
One side of duplicator goes to the phone/PBX (as before).
Other side goes to the corresponding LINE jack on the POS unit.
2Connect serial cable
Plug the DB9 cable into the unit and into the POS computer’s COM port. If no COM port exists, use a USB-to-serial adapter and install its driver.
3Power on
Connect 9 V adapter. Green power LED lights immediately.
4Configure POS software
Open your POS application’s caller ID settings.
Select the correct COM port (e.g., COM3).
Set baud rate to 9600 (default for POS units).
Data bits: 8, Parity: None, Stop bits: 1 (8N1).
5Verify with a test call
Call in from a cell phone. Confirm caller ID appears on the POS screen within 2 rings.
Tip: If you don’t know which COM port to use, open Windows Device Manager → Ports (COM & LPT) to see assigned port numbers.

Line 1–8Off (idle) / Solid (ringing/in-use)Lights when line activity detected
First-Time Setup
1Connect phone lines
Same as POS Serial: use line duplicators to tap each incoming phone line into the corresponding LINE jack.
2Connect Ethernet
Plug the Cat5e cable from the unit’s Ethernet port into the same network switch used by the POS computer.
3Power on
Connect 9 V adapter. Power LED and Ethernet Link LED should both light green.
4Set IP address
By default the unit uses DHCP. If your network has a DHCP server, the unit will receive an IP automatically.
To assign a static IP, use the ELConfig utility (available at callerid.com/downloads) or the Vertex Configuration Tool.
Default UDP port: 3520.
5Configure POS software
In your POS caller ID settings, select Ethernet/Network mode.
Enter the unit’s IP address and port (3520).
Some POS systems auto-discover Ethernet units via UDP broadcast.
6Verify with a test call
Call in from a cell phone. Confirm caller ID appears on the POS screen.
Energy Efficient Ethernet (EEE): Some managed switches have EEE enabled by default, which can cause intermittent data loss. If caller ID is inconsistent, disable EEE on the switch port connected to the unit.
4. Whozz Calling Basic (2, 4, 8 Line — Serial)
Whozz Calling Basic Quick-Start Card

Basic vs Deluxe: The Basic unit captures incoming caller ID only. It connects in parallel (tap) and does not need to be wired in-line. This means you can disconnect it without affecting phone service.
LED Indicators
LEDNormal StateMeaning

Line 1–8Off (idle) / Flash on ringFlashes when incoming ring detected on that line
First-Time Setup
1Connect phone lines (parallel tap)
Attach a line duplicator to each incoming phone wall jack.
One side continues to the phone or PBX as before.
The other side connects to the matching LINE jack on the Basic unit.
2Connect serial cable
Plug DB9 into the unit and into your computer. Use a USB-to-serial adapter if no native COM port is available.
3Power on
Connect 9 V adapter. Green power LED lights immediately. Verify dial tone still works on all phones.
4Configure software
Select the correct COM port in your caller ID software or POS system.
Baud rate: 9600 (default).
Settings: 8 data bits, No parity, 1 stop bit (8N1).
5Verify with a test call
Call in from a cell phone. The line LED should flash, and caller ID data should appear in your software.
5. Whozz Calling Deluxe (2, 4, 8 Line — Serial)
Whozz Calling Deluxe Quick-Start Card

First-Time Setup
1Connect phone lines IN-LINE
Disconnect the phone cable from the wall jack.
Connect wall jack → LINE IN on the Deluxe unit.
Connect LINE OUT → phone, PBX, or key system.
Repeat for each phone line.
2Connect serial cable
Plug DB9 into the unit and into your computer. Use a USB-to-serial adapter if needed.
3Power on
Connect 9 V adapter. Verify power LED is green and all phones still have dial tone.
4Configure software
Select the correct COM port in your caller ID software.
Baud rate: 9600 (default).
Settings: 8 data bits, No parity, 1 stop bit (8N1).
5Verify with a test call
Inbound test: Call in from a cell phone. Verify caller ID appears.
Outbound test: Pick up a monitored phone and dial a number. Verify the dialed digits are captured.
Duration test: Make a short call, hang up, and verify the call duration is logged.

7. Universal Test Call Procedure
After completing any device setup, follow this procedure to confirm everything works:
1Prepare a test phone
Use a cell phone (not connected to the same phone system) so the caller ID is guaranteed to be delivered from the carrier.
2Open your monitoring software
Have the POS caller ID screen, HyperTerminal, or a serial monitor open and ready before placing the call.
3Place the test call
Call your monitored line from the cell phone. Let it ring at least 2 full rings before answering (caller ID is delivered between ring 1 and ring 2).
4Verify the data
You should see a data record similar to:
01 I S 0000 G 1 01/15 02:30 PM 770-555-1234 CELL PHONE
Confirm: line number, phone number, and caller name appear.
5Verify on each line
Repeat the test on every phone line connected to the unit. Each line should produce its own data record with the correct line number (01, 02, 03, etc.).
Installation complete! If all lines produce caller ID data, your device is fully operational.
Troubleshooting Quick Checks
Symptom Possible Cause & Fix
No data at all Check power LED is on. Verify serial/Ethernet cable is connected. Confirm correct COM port or IP address in software.
Data on some lines but not others Verify RJ11 cables are seated on the non-working lines. Test with a different phone line cable.
Caller ID shows “P” or “Private” The calling party has caller ID blocked. Test from a different phone with caller ID enabled.
Caller ID shows “O” or “Out of Area” The carrier is not delivering caller ID. Contact your phone provider to confirm caller ID service is active.
Checksum = “B” (bad) Line noise or signal degradation. Check wiring, try a shorter cable, or add a line filter.
Garbled/partial data (serial) Baud rate mismatch. Confirm both unit and software are set to 9600, 8N1.
Intermittent data (Ethernet) Disable Energy Efficient Ethernet (EEE) on the switch port. Check for IP address conflicts.
Vertex: no caller ID on VoIP VoIP traffic may be encrypted (TLS/SRTP). Vertex requires unencrypted SIP. Contact your VoIP provider or use an ATA adapter.
Deluxe: no outbound digits Unit must be wired in-line (not parallel). Verify LINE IN and LINE OUT are correctly connected.
