Basic Installation Guide (Analog Devices)
For Whozz Calling Basic POS 2, 4, and 8 units (Serial and Ethernet models)
Pre-Installation Checklist
- [ ] Verify customer has analog phone lines (not digital PBX extensions)
- [ ] Confirm Caller ID service is active with phone company
- [ ] Count number of phone lines to be monitored
- [ ] Determine connection method: Serial, USB-to-Serial, or Ethernet
- [ ] Locate where lines enter building (demarc/phone closet)
Critical Wiring Rule
Whozz Calling devices MUST connect to Central Office (CO) lines coming into the building - NOT extension lines from a PBX/phone system. PBX systems do not pass analog Caller ID signaling.

Wiring Rules
| Rule | Explanation |
|---|---|
| Use RJ11 connections | Each port accepts 1 line (2 wires). RJ14 (2-line) cords must be converted. |
| Parallel connection | Use Line Duplicators to branch each line to both device and phones. |
| Before the phone system | Connect to lines BEFORE they enter PBX/phone switch. |
| No extension lines | Station ports from phone systems will show "No-CallerID". |
Connecting Phone Lines - Ethernet Models
Scenario 1: Single-line wall jacks (RJ11)
- Unplug telephone cord from wall jack
- Insert unmarked modular Duplicator into jack
- Connect telephone to one side of Duplicator - verify dial tone
- Connect phone cord from other side to Whozz Calling "L1" port
- Repeat for additional lines
Scenario 2: Two-line wall jacks (RJ14)
- Unplug telephone cord from wall jack
- Insert 3-way Splitter marked "L1+L2 L2 L1" into jack
- Connect telephone to L1+L2 output - verify dial tone on both lines
- Connect cords from L1 and L2 outputs to CallerID unit ports L1 and L2
Important: 3-way Splitters must be specifically marked "L1+L2 L2 L1" - NOT unmarked duplicators from retail stores.
Ethernet Connection
- Connect Ethernet port to same network as POS displays
- Default static IP: 192.168.0.90 (may need to change to match your network)
- Use ELConfig tool to change IP: CallerID.com → Support → Diagnostic Tools → Ethernet Whozz Calling
- Set static IP within your IP scheme and outside DHCP range
- Ensure popup software is NOT running when using ELConfig
Wireless devices: Set "Duplicate Call Records" to 8 via: Configure → Set Duplicate Call Records
Serial Connection
- Connect serial cable from unit to computer COM port
- If no COM port, use USB-to-Serial adapter
- Verify in Windows Device Manager: Ports (COM & LPT)
- Configure POS software for correct COM port at 9600 baud
DIP Switch Settings - Standard US
All DIP switches should be in the DOWN (OFF) position for standard US installations.
Exception: UK, EU, and countries using ETSI FSK signaling: Set DIP #4 UP (ON), all others DOWN.
Testing
- Download Serial Loop II from CallerID.com/Downloads/Diagnostic-Tools/
- Close any POS software using the COM port
- Run Serial Loop and select COM port at 9600 baud
- Power cycle the unit - boot-up data should appear
- Make a test call - Caller ID should appear
